    • Develop, implement and sustain proactive environmental, health and safety strategies and processes to directly impact the elimination of work-related injuries/incidents, minimize risk, maintain regulatory compliance, and reduce losses.
    • Provide leadership and direction to mill population to ensure continuity of established practices and transformation of safety culture.
    • Coordinate the Mill environmental and safety efforts to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, company policies and procedures.

    Supporting Activities

    • Manage Environmental, Health and Safety team and provide direction to their day to day activities. Includes union and non-union direct reports.
    • Analyze environmental, health, safety-related concerns, incident investigations and report trends to recommend course of action/corrective action to prevent recurrence.
    • Provide insight, strategies and plans to achieve Mill objectives based upon best practice information.
    • Direct and maintain environmental and compliance with existing and new requirements.
    • Cultivate employee commitment to a “Believe in Zero” culture.
    • Develops and administers company safety and environmental policies and procedures.
    • Actively interacts with all employees to promote safe behaviors and conditions.
    • Establish and implement Plant-wide safety communications to ensure employees are aware of potential hazards and substandard conditions.
    • Develop and conduct employee environmental and safety training and emergency preparedness.
    • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazardous potential (e.g. lockout, confined space entry, hot work, etc.).
    • Measure, audit, and evaluate the effectiveness of environmental and safety strategies and processes.
    • Facilitate incident investigations, root cause analysis, and closure of corrective actions.
    • Coordinate and assist monthly training/meetings for emergency response team.
    • Directs and coordinates the administration of OSHA, Title IV, EPA, DEP, WC regulations, including review interpretation, and implementation of standards. Ensures accurate reporting as required.
    • Works closely with the Company Medical Director, Occupational Health Nurse, and Legal on and Workers Compensation cases and other issues.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of available personal protective equipment and monitoring devices, and purchases said equipment on a cost-effective basis.
    • Co-chair the Executive Safety Team committee.
    • Lead efforts toward full Lean/Six Sigma/Daily Continuous Improvement integration and culture.
    • Collaborate with other Appvion locations to share and adopt best practices.
    • Implement strategies to improve operator engagement and support High Performance Work Teams.
    • Take responsibility for and direct the workforce loss prevention programs within the mill through the use of specific activity based objectives, reviewed on a routine and annual basis.
    • Provide direction and support to Top Management on ISO certification process.

    Required Prior Accomplishments - Experience - Skills

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and/or Environmental Science or Engineering, or closely related field.
    • Professional certifications such as CSP, CHMM, CFPS, or CIH are preferred.
    • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of professional environmental, health, and safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
    • Experience with emergency response (e.g. first aid, CPR, confined space rescue, spill & fire) preferred.
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize as needed.
    • Experience with an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. 
    • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to interact with all levels of management and hourly personnel.
    • Evidence of required management leadership competencies.
    • Proficient in the use of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point) and the ability to comprehend and learn other software programs.
    • Prior experience in a union environment preferred.
